Re: [microsound] q's:

just got this dispatch on platforms and pgms. had 7 performances over 6 days ending halloween night. running numbers on monday and tuesday with a lecture at the time-based art lab at fiu.
i don't know about the best, but i just did two shows in miami As "needle") with v/vm and ashtray navigations and i used my pc and a beta audio mulch live. it duplicates shows i did in the eighties riding the faders with two effectrons, three tape echoes (3 sound-on-sound decks) and various verbs and delays, all running back into each other. lovely! my hats off to Ross.

right now my platform is a 400mhz pII (with 64m ram--i need 128, tho, cdrw, 2nd cd rom, 13g hard-drive, 56k modem, sound card, keyboard and monitor it cost about $750 to put together) economy is the reason i chose this platform, with servicing also a major consideration. i have a computer scientist and pc expert in the wings. apple support is THE WORST, or at least was the worst for me-very disheartening considering how much money we spent, going directly to apple co.
when i put together an experimental media lab based around media 100 at wolfson/mdcc and had hardware problems; when i could finally get thru to apple support, they consistently shifted blame to third parties, until their vendor bench-tested my power mac and concluded, yes, apple's hardware was at fault. i went through six(!) applevision monitors until i had a pair that lasted more than 6 months.
that said, mac is nonetheless the platform i prefer, windows is clunky and i'd like to try out max from ircam and the g4 looks great.
but i do get much use from sound forge.
