um, since this was done in 1979 I think we're talking PDP-11 or some such
beast...
let me also point out that although SAWDUST shares certain characteristics
with granular synthesis (ie: manipulating sound on an 'atomic' level), the
technique is better described as waveform synthesis: "the SAWDUST system is
an interactive environment for manipulating amplitude points and combining
them hierarchically into pieces of waveforms, sections and complete
compositions" (Roads)
there are other waveform synthesis systems such as Xenakis' GENDY and UPIC
as well as waveshaping with random shaping functions...
