arts, music, and science" to include Michael Wanger, Greg Jalbert,
Stephen Malinowski, and Eric Wenger, as well as Dr. Pellegrino's own
creations -- "Soft Candy," "Cynthia's Dream," the Hewlett-Packard
Visual Music session (from a decade and a half ago), "Visual Music
Meditations" raw tape and cyber output), and "LightWorks."

Location: Autodesk Atrium, 111 McInnis Parkway, San Rafael

Reservations: Not required

Composer Backgrounds:

- Michael Wanger is the award-winning film, video, and multimedia
producer known for his synthesis of music and the wonders of nature.
(Also, an NBMA member.)

- Greg Jalbert, among his pioneering efforts, developed the software
Bliss Paint that creates animations that respond in real-time to MIDI
and sound input. It is used worldwide to create video and live-
performance light shows.

- Stephen Malinowski invented and continues to improve upon the Music
Animation Machine, which, in contrast to the freewheeling Bliss
Paint, produces a more precise and literal animated graphical score.

- Eric Wenger started U&I Softwares, developing ArtMatic and
MetaSynth, the latter a fast and flexible graphic sound design and
synthesis environment.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Ron Pellegrino spends a lot of time in research,
some of which is devoted to emerging affordable technologies. He has
wandered the outposts of the "electronic arts" all of his adult life
dealing with merging science, technology and art. His 1968 doctoral
thesis at the University of Wisconsin was published as "An Electronic
Studio Manual" and became the operating guide for the Moog
synthesizer worldwide. And his 1981 book, The Electronic Arts of
Sound and Light, may well have coined the term which has become part
of the company he founded in 1981, Electronic Arts Productions. He
rails against corporate and education pressures to conform, yet the
same entities that he criticizes turn around and hire him. Dr.
Pellegrino advises, consults, designs, produces, and performs. He has
done over 600 residencies and events, ranging from days to years.
What he enjoys most is the research, but the events give him the
chance to step back and pull it all together. He says "I'll never do
another book -- the website is my book." His website
(http://www.microweb.com/ronpell) has become a worldwide center for
research, and it will also be featured in his presentation.
