Re: [microsound] frank bretschneider and the 'process'....

i've not heard the earlier komet/noto/produkt releases on raster (the
white-covered ones), but tracks from those artists on caipirinha's
"microscopic sound" and 12k's ".aiff," and on both bretschneider's and
carsten nicolai's 20" to 2000 releases, fit perfectly in line with what
you'll find on "rand." half the tracks are overtly rhythmic (that is to
say, percussive, drum sounds consisting of the sort of clicks and thuds
you'd expect of a raster-related release), while the other half are
abstract combinations of looping tones and textures. a few of the tracks
even remind me of early, minimal atom heart (circa: "interactive music"),
though decidedly more achromatic and "pure." tracks follow a sort of
additive aesthetic, with loops added to loops in interesting, often
surprising ways, playing with the assumptions of form bred by the
conventions of pattern-based sequencing. also, to return to an earlier
thread, most of the tracks on "rand" are in the 2- to 3-minute zone --
perfect little sound-machines built for playful contemplation.

oh, and i'm enjoying it immensely. :)
