I find:
6-7+ mins seems appropriate for evolving/organic analog(?) things. Time to 
notice subtleties. Lower frequency stuff?

1-3 mins for sharper more clinical repititions. Higher freq. stuff?

these are of course only vague suggestions.
it all varies on the piece,  really, just whatever  time lends itself to the 
individual work.
