performativity / length of work
maybe the move toward shorter fragments is part of a thing about the
"beautiful miniature" -- dsp sound often operates as "sonic artefact",
i.e. a little wierd singular kind of sound, some internal structure but
it hangs together as a single sonic object. maybe short works are like
little display cases for these things (or velvet cushions on which to
display their compact thingness)?
i agree with the tendency to go either micro (object) or macro (process/transform)
re performance, i have to plug australian/nz duo minit, who play live
with a mixer, kb and sampler (not exactly laptop i know). they generate
lazy loopy fuzzy minimal music without sequences, and both play
everything. it ends up looking like slo-mo twister, an arm around here
to tweak the eq, another arm under there to trigger another sample. a
nice composite musical organism.
