- DSP?

hi --

i'm new to this list, i joined in because i'm interested in                                 
this kind if music, although i'm new to it too. i got to listen                             
to it from the post dance/techno electronic music direction, 
and now i listen to farmers manual, pita, robert henke and the likes.
i'm very interested in exploring experimental music of this nature 
more thoroughly, and i listen to new stuff whenever i get the chance,
but i dont know where to start (thought this might be a good place :)
anyway, i dont want to be bluntly ignorant, but what is DSP? 
i mean, i know how it sounds, but what makes it that way?
what happens inside the computer, if you will? what are the
sound sources and how do you process them?
well i think you got the drift...
btw i'm not english speaking so if there are horrible spelling
or syntax mistakes feel free to correct me.
