ethnography of listening
greeting everyone,
sorry for the cross posting.
I was just given the go ahead on a small project on the ethnography of
listening, for an honors seminar on symbolic anthropology. I am interested
in discovering and describing a ritual of listening as well as the symbols
of listening, whether it being notation, listening postures, stations, times
to listen et cetera. Accompanying this description, will of course, be a
criticism. In the process of writing this paper I will also talk about the
rites of listening through ritual, i.e., understanding the composition, the
composer, elevating the listener et cetera, or more simply what are the
outcomes of this type of listening opposed to other types of listening. The
concluding parts of my project will be comparing the rituals of listening
with other types of listening found in more subcultures or other cultures.
Why I come to you is to find some sources or to ask for some sources on
listening in general. An alternative would be the interaction of music and
the audience. I am not to sure if this makes too much sense, but it has kept
my curiosity for sometime now and this is an opportunity to explore it via
the academia.
any comments, inquiries, suggestions would be helpful.
thanks
arden
