INFORMATION:
initially intended to be tiny CD-R release for exclusive distribution to
members of the lowercasesound list server
(www.onelist.com/subscribe/lowercase-sound). the number and quality of the
submissions soon made it apparent that this should be released in a wider
format.

LOWERCASE BACKGROUND:
the lowercasesound list server was created by james coleman in early 1999
to create "a unmoderated discussion & announcement list concerning a
disparate group of musics, sound art & listening experiences that emphasize
or include some or all of the characteristics of low volume, silence,
soundscape/environmental/field recordings, indeterminacy, psycho/acoustic
treatments of space, environment & context & possible relationships of this
work to art in other media ie painting, drawing & film & poetry. "

this broad heading allowed the compilation to be quite a diverse but
unified document with exclusive tracks from all the artists.

sounds range from practically invisible (bernhard g|nter, *0) to intricate
rhythmic modulations (taylor deupree, steve roden) to crushing torrents of
noise (oren ambarchi and matthew thomas, toneshifter)

EXCERPT FROM LINER NOTES:
"'lowercasesound' a term coined by steve rodan in an interview last year is
obliquely self-explanatory. this compilation represents artists fromacross
the world who place committed listening at the top of the creative musical
process. it is in this moment of pure attention that one's sense ofself
simultaneously disappears and swells to encompass the surroundings. by
composing for this type of listening (good headphones at high volume
recommended) these artists force the listener to pay focused attention to
sound. after a couple times through this set you may discover for yourself
that compositions are all around you at every moment, the hum of the
refrigerator, the refuge truck backing up in the alley, a plastic bag
trapped in the fence rustling...'the only thing that is not art is
inattention' said Marcel Duchamp, and now you too are paying attention.
enjoy!"
