Re: [microsound] Re: Music Presentation/ Whining about my teacher
s'funny! a number of years ago i was in a music series along with alvin
lucier (meet the composer) and i was performing popular music (happiness
boys) with experimental (and brut) leanings. we shared a program with a
composer who was (and is) a tenured professor from the university of miami's
school of music. he "opened" for us, and as soon as his recital concluded,
and we began to perform, his students rose in unison and left. the last
selection that we played ends abruptly after a sustained chord of vic 20
generated sound. the concert was recorded and broadcast in its entirety on
the npr network. at the moment that chord ends there is a very brief moment
of silence, a gasp from the audience, then resounding applause. clearly they
were moved.
years later i met lucier, again, during a sub-tropics musical festival.
he was playing strawberry fields into a tea pot. the loveliest cover i'm
likely to ever hear. so, pop music is where you find it i suppose...roll
over beethoven!
