RE: [microsound] On the subject of coil...
At 02:24 PM 8/29/00 -0300, it was uttered:
thinking=baaaaaaaad.
instinct=gooooooooooood.
Humans display both with equal imperfection. I suppose what appeals to me
about Coil is that these sorts of artificial dyads and manufactured
disputes roll right off the music itself, which these days needs neither
grammatically distressed theoretical crutches within its liner notes nor
appeals to the great mystical beyond in order to justify its existence or
puff up its World-Historical Relevance. The new Coil, after all, is
Music(k) to Play in the Dark - not while reading arch tomes - and to me the
greatest power of this music is in its emotional depth, while what makes it
most impressive is the deceptive ease with which this group has fashioned
such rich and memorable world of sound. As for "thinking" - which I also
find a rewarding activity (but not to be confused with "wisdom") - is it
too not a part of human "instinct?"
