RE: [microsound] Bernhard Gunter starting place?
i wanted to second this recommendation, and urge you towards picking up
details agrandis. the sounds that gunter uses in his newer works are much
more recognizable-as to their source (don't get me wrong, 'slow
gestures/ceremonie desir (for henke)' and 'blue, brown, blue on brown(for
rothko)' are mind plunging albums, not to mention 'univers...') whereas in
the work earning him his keep among the other great minimalists, the sounds
are obscured and masked through various means of processing, making the
compositions that much more abstract and that much more engaging. details
agrandis is three pieces timing in about 67 minutes (sorry don't know the
dim), with each piece being dedicated to a friend and artist- jim o'rourke,
richard long and giancarlo toniutti. the compositions range from full
audibility (8 minute mark in 'four grey paintings') to the many moments of
hushed noise. there are many of those great juxtapositions, where a loud
sound jumps out of the jynt sylents and puts your ears in place, and nearly
stops your heart. it is a great introduction, as it was mine, and I return
to it quite often to be mesmerized and calmed/frightened.
I also recommend 'univers temporel espoir', especially the track 'the ant
moves/the black and yellow carcass a little close' which originally appeared
on the 'a fault in the nothing' compilation from ash international for some
of the finest sound jumping out moments.
enough said from me,
"gunter is great" please sing along.

I'd rather advice one of his early works- "Un Peu de Neige Salie"
(resissued
twice on TotE) being an uncomparable milestone (and probably one of his
best
works), plus it contains the only piece he ever made with pure software
sounds (Untitled I/94). His cd with John Duncan "Home Unspeakable" (Trente
Oiseaux)is also incredible, as well as his second "Details Agrandis" and
his
3'' on Metamkine (Impossible Grey) which is really easy to find. I really
like his recent stuff, but it's so different from his early works...(almost
at times unrecognizable).
