Re: [microsound] microvising...and structures

I'd agree that in improv collaborations, communication on a conscious or
subconscious level is integral, but much of the best laptop improv is
performed solo.

Yes, good point... I was thinking more of an ensemble situation.

I think the kind of improvisation I'm trying to get at is more of a
"disciplined impulse." Yes, I agree, we cannot escape our influences. What
I'm speaking of doesn't deny that fact. This kind of improvisation comes
from a level of comfort that one achieves with their instrument through
years of experience. This intimate knowledge of the instrument produces
work with a different meaning and a different focus from composed works.

This is more what I'm thinking of as well. There are ways to prepare for any kind of improv on any instrument (practice, listening to the other players, theory, etc.), but the prep on a laptop is somewhat different, it seems to me (back to the collage issue)... assembling samples, fragments, or even entire "compositions" that are then manipulated in some way during performance. Interfaces certainly seem to be the answer here (to my concerns/interests, at least), motion sensors (for the visceral element) or keyboard environments (like the keyolin Jon mentioned), or maybe something yet to come...
