I think there can be a legitimate distinction between theory (in the sense of concept or idea) and practice, at least in what I believe Steve was getting at... can't a good idea be poorly executed?

I'm contextualizing the remark of the original post to the previous discussions we've had about "theory" and its relations to music. In the original post, there was mention of so-called "pseudo-academic" approaches, which is rather different, even though pejorative, from a banal distinction like the one to which you refer. Though perhaps this is what was originally meant.



Understood, though one might also say that the solution (at least on a personal level, where I believe one has to begin), is to simply be more accepting of other folk's sensibilities instead of reacting against them in any particular way. OUr emotional response is true, certainly, but we need not invoke it on others... and if we then create a space to reevaluate the way we interact with art (or anything, really), all the better.

I agree. This is why I wrote to begin with and basically in agreement with the original post. That the category of "judgment" is a highly problematic one and a highly personal one. It's the personal aspect that all too often gets left out in such discussions.
