Another paranoid sound-recording-related movie from the 70s is Brian 
DePalma's Blowout (not to be confused with Blowup).  John Travolta plays a 
sound-effects guy who is out in the woods recording an owl one night when he 
accidentally records a murder in progress.  There's a really cool scene 
where somebody has come in and trashed his studio, so he starts putting a 
tape on every reel-to-reel deck he has and the camera does a 360 pan around 
the studio as he keeps putting on more and more tapes and the layers of hiss 
keep building up.  Worth seeing if you liked the Conversation.
