Re: fennesz & pita creative?







Hi, 

I was talking recently with Le Quan Nin (I know I spelled that wrong but I
just can't do any better), (he is a French percussionist in the European
free improve seen) And he told me that Both Fennesz and Pita don't write
their own patches. . . (Fennesz words were that he is to lazy to do his own
programming). . . It just seems like what are they doing then? The program
really isn't just the "instrument" (when it comes to Max/MSP), but its the
peace of music itself (that changes in each performance, and can be
improvised on of course), but the creative "stamp" of the Program itself is
too huge to overlook. . . .

I am not of the opinion that if it sounds good it is good (all though if it
doesn't sound good it rarely is good)...  I feel like the computer does so
much already, then to go ahead and use someone else's max patch. . . I'm not
even sure who is "creating" the music. . . .

BTW I mean to be controversial. . . This problem exists beyond Fennesz and
pita, A lot of people are "getting away" with doing very little of the work
to make this music happen. .. .

doesnt the guy from oval talk about this a lot... the issue is pretty tired and boring but it shows we still have hang-ups about using computers as instruments.

the fetishization of the computer as tool has reached a strange climax now. i dont see it being different to the way the guitar became a sex object in the 1950's. the operators of computers rarely wear leather-jackets or smoke malboros or ride motorcycles (exceptions?) but its the same deal isnt it?

few rockabilly cats built their own guitars, leave that to experts. hendrix took the guitar and made it flaccid again when he set it on fire in front of a million screaming hippies, he bought impotence back to music. christian fennesz uses the guitar doesnt he, but he's playing with a ghost he's setting fire to it again... he still loves music, you can hear it, and i dig his drones in my living room @ night. natch.

any laptoppers set fire to their powerbooks yet? thrown them against p.a. stacks? we're still in rock and roll territory here friends... where is the benzidrine hendrix of max/msp?... dont go saying kid606; yr know he's just little richard.
