The whole "laptop musician" thing is the most ridiculous instance of the press revealing its ignorance. I mean, how exactly does a laptop differ from any other computer (other than the fact that it folds up and is easy to take to gigs)? This would be like trying to label a scene as "nord rack rockers" or something, differentiating them from people who are so uncool as to use the keyboard version rather than the hip rack mounted version. Is anyone else as perplexed by this as me?

um, no.

the laptop isn't being differentiated from any other sort of computer. there is no difference. for practical reasons, the laptop is more convenient and popular for live performance, it appears more often, hence the media-term.

also it is possible that the term "computer music" has an older (and more academic background), but then this could be conjecture... laptop musician generally relates to a younger generation of operators and artists that began to appear from 1994 onwards. yadda yadda.
