that word (in its british meaning) has always thrown me. in american
football you generally punt on 4th down (the offense's last chance to make
a 1st down, thus you run the risk of losing the ball at your current place
on the field if you don't convert). therefore, the *real* gamble would be
to try for the 1st down, instead of giving the ball away.
