the fetishist - WAS Re: [microsound] nuno cannavaro
it seems to me that all music is fetishism as you describe it. jazz >or
improvisatory musicians fetishize their instruments and stylistic >playing,
rock bands fetishize their styles, etc. eg: certain formal elements >that
"stylize" the sound; common melodies/hooks; trends in music.
saying this as you put it: formalities and common techniques in all >styles
of music tend to reduce creativity and "derail" the desire of the >music
for
another purpose.
whoah, this is waaaay out of whack! fetishising instruments and music
itself? i've taken basic introductory freudian/marxist courses and agree
more with josh here...maybe obsession is a better word, as it's kind of
difficult to have a 'rock-n-roll fetish'
this topic of 'glitch-as-fashion' is interesting as well, what with articles
in major style mags like SURFACE interviewing carsten nicolai, et al...there
is a RA interview with jim o'rourke online (i can't remember the address,
linked somewhere off of his huge-ass discography online as well) where he
says remarks about the issue of Powerbooks on-the-rise in Chicago and the
upsurge in 'experimental' music in general and compares it to, and i'm
quoting loosely here:
"kids who get together in their basement and play RAMONES cover tunes"
so this sort of simulation/simulacra of 'experimental' music..i'm thinking
he means here people being at the mercy of 'the machine' (in this case being
kids who can only really rely on tabulatures/already produced songs, not
really able to create their own 'statement'). i'm not trying to set up a
flame-war, but this is certainly interesting for someone like o'rourke who
has a verrry deep knowledge of the history of experimental music and music
in general, but i tend to agree...yeah it's kinda cool that you wind up with
100 minute sound-files of static because you didn't save the right way, it
happens to me all the time, but it's also kind of cool to watch kids who
just watched a MINOR THREAT video get together, form a band, and be 'punk
rock'. sort of the scenario "those who are at the mercy of the patch from
the program they downloaded" or something similar.
i think people / groups like terre thaemlitz or the MAKE UP are interesting
for attempting to move past the fetishization/obsession/whatever with a
particular sound and taking other angles (socio-political
theory/praxis/socialist gospel yeh-yeh rock). punk fucking rock.
