i just read an article in I-D magazine stating something like now it's 'hip' 
to be boring, wear Reeboks, buy bland-looking appliances, not have a 
'personality', etc. So this is drenched with irony.

i think this applies to microsound as well. it's 'hip' now to have these 
a-emotionless dudes behind Powerbooks staring into the depths of  the screen 
making these sound-environments, glitch-trips into the depths of their hard 
drives. this point in late-capitalism might even parallel the cultural 
Rennaissance of black Harlem in the 20s and 30s with recent sterile bar/art 
environments offering the home to deterritorialized/re-territorialized beats 
and drones to accompany the degree of affluence and dot-commism that have 
effected our society as a whole that mirror that time-periods flowering of 
jazz clubs, literature, poetry, etc....except now ours comes perhaps just as 
spontaneously but now online, linked to other FLASHed-up websites that seek 
to dislocate / relocate you.

whether microsound is disposable or not.....i would like to look to an album 
like the recent CHICKS ON SPEED with their dada-ist costuming and completely 
non.sterilized approach with off-key vocals, lots of 'natural' breaths, 
sometimes completely drowned-out, but very human.

the whole thing is dialectic but you don't need to look back to hegel to see 
our current culture as a junkyard where we're constantyl ripping through the 
past at light speed to get new product. consider ekkehard ehlers album 
'Betrieb'. microusound treatment of (i forget, schostakovich? stravinsky?). 
or florian hecker's remixes of jim o'rourke, bruce gilbert, cd_slopper, etc.

historical parallels to the microsound phenom. can be found in the paintings 
of mondrian, minimalism from the 60s, all the hard-edged emotionless 
sculptures of time periods just a generation or two before. think of the 
colour theorists. josef albers. studies on the square can be the visual 
equivalent of ikeda's MATRIX.

comparisons can also be made to older bands like THE SLITS, punk rock from 
britain, etc... listen to the comp. LIPSTICK TRACES. once can hold PITA akin 
to the same energy of the BUZZCOCKS, SEX PISTOLS, THE SLITS, etc...a sort of 
'consume your idols' phenomenon.
