It actually looks more like a 'Mhz to overcome phallic shortcomings' thread
to me!

I never read a description of this mailinglist but I am suprised by the
amount of cpu-addicted 'patch junkies'. Maybe this is what seperates the
dorks from the geeks but am I the only one who's more impressed when someone
dicks around on a commodore 64 than when they pull out their powerbook?? I
get a kick out of people into 'circuit bending' electronic toys and
disposable keyboards that just doesnt hit me when people talk about routing
options for a patch that is only worthy if its so convoluted it requires the
purchase of the latest CPU.

I don't want to denigrate anyones interests too much, I'm sure I'll be into
500-1ghz chips in 5 years when they cost $10. It'll seem pretty cool to me
to have a lot of firepower for next to nothing just as it does now when I
pick up old computers for nothing. Its like the diffference between buying
a beatup guitar at the pawn shop or shelling out a couple of grand for the
shiny new model endorsed by someone famous. You expect the tone out of the
$2000 model to be sweet, but you're impressed with yourself if you can get a
sweet tone out of the pawn shop special.

Reminds me of a couple years ago when people were ditching their desktop
computers for laptops, saying 'it will save a lot of space in my apartment'.
But if they had put that $ toward rent they could afford a bigger place!
But seriously if you can afford to chase after technology, go for it. But
if you're like me and can't, quit tryin! Supposedly there is a slowdown in
computer sales for the first time in 20 years. 'Regular' people are happy
with the machines they've bought in the past few years and don't feel the
need to upgrade to the latest model. Only Mhz-junkies doing stuff like you
guys are actually pining for a faster chip. Don't blame Mac or Intel for
trying to up their Mhz, they're only doing whatever they can to convince
people to keep buying new computers.
