other bits: i picked up the oren ambarchi/martin ng cd on staubgold

figured i'd give him another try. so far i like this one more.
pretty drone based, but less murky, and a little more progression in
the tracks (three of them clocking in at over 10 mins each). nice
design work by tina frank as well. i also ordered the sack and blumm
10" on staubgold, which has yet to arrive. what's the word on this
label? some interesting artists releasing through them...
Nice to see some mention of this label, especially as it seems to fit
into no particular category and to follow nothing other than the
clearly quite interesting taste of its pilots. I have several
releases on this label, and all are quite rewarding and different
from each other: Tesendalo "Laura" LP (droning analog cosmic
electronics with sounds from the musician's baby), Reuber "Anna" LP
(smooth, upbeat, and melodic electronics in a quite hypnotic early
Kraftwerk mode by one member of Klangwart), Institut fuer Feinmotorik
"Wenig Information: Kein Titel" LP (minimal and rhythmic
experimental turntable artifacts), Groenland Orchester CD (upbeat and
quite warmly quirky electronic instrumental pop, not distant from the
Morr Music, City Centre Offices, and Karaoke Kalk aesthetics), and
Gunter Adler "15 Electronic Pieces" CD (by one member of Groenland
Orchester and exploring a similar but slightly mellower vein). It
seems that the Klangwart label Klangstelle is associated with
Staubgold, and here all three releases I have managed to locate -
"Inkiek" 3"CD, "Koln-Olpe" LP, and "Zwei" LP - have surprised me with
their changes in direction from Cluster/HNAS space music through
early Kraftwerk rhythmic hypnosis to minimalist drones. Most of the
releases to which I have been exposed have not been at all micro, but
for those who like to smile and be surprised while listening to
electronic music, Staubgold is worthy of much exploration.
afternoon listening:
Piano Magic "Artists' Rifles" (one of the best rock albums of last year)
Sigur Ros "Agaetis Byrjun" (very nice so far on a first listen)
afternoon reading:
Nick Hornby "High Fidelity" (for us who haunt lists such as these, a
brutal and hilarious portrait of record geekery)
