This Saturday night, Jacksonville, FL's Jackrabbits will host a concert featuring Isotope 217 and the Chicago Underground Duo. With a sound that often resembles a scratchy Real-Audio stream of Fela Kuti, Isotope 217 is funky. Their music is littered with deep rhythms and pocky grooves, yet the band consistently destabilizes any funk-genre allegiance by applying a hefty amount of glitch: they embrace digital processing as an essential component of the production, and they work to translate studio techniques into live performance. The Chicago Underground Duo are equally comfortable juggling electronic and acoustic instruments, and stylistically lean heavily toward AACM free jazz.

Isotope 217 and the Duo prominently feature (among others) cornetist/electronix guy Rob Mazurek and drummer/programmer Johnny Herndon. Rob is a vocal fan of such *microsound* treasures as Nuno Canavarro's Plux Quba and Mark Rothko paintings, and will soon be releasing his first all-synth/DSP album on Jim O'Rourke's label Moikai. Johnny is best known as the propulsive drummer behind Tortoise; he also assumes the nom-de-scratch of A Grape Dope when recording his dubby, atmospheric solo work for Hefty Records.

Opening act The Buenos Aires (my band) will play their vision of Kryzystof Komeda in a game of air hockey with King Tubby, refereed by the ghost of Gastr del Sol.

Expect fascinating, spectral jams in a very intimate venue.  Email this address for more info.
