I seem to recall it's to do with the type of lacquer certain pressing plants used (possibly only Phillips
in fact) and, in my experience, it *does* change the sound quite considerably.  Not so much change as
augment, actually - it's as though sheets of static were added to the existing sounds.  Not very
microsound, though!

As to how you'd do it yourself, I'm not sure you could, unless you could replicate the corroding effects
from which these discs suffer.  Worth a try though...
