the once.twice festival of sound

day.one saturday march 24 @ the ottobar $7
schedule:
3:30pm - doors open
:::show begins:::
4:00pm - ian nagoski/dan conrad

:::ian nagoski / dan conrad:::
daniel conrad began work on his chromaccord light
organ in the early 70s after seeing joseph albers?
theoretical work on the effects of juxtaposed color on
human perception. The chromaccord adds time,
improvisation and inspiration to albers? work,
creating psychedelic retina-tingling sequences of
afterimages, analogous in many ways to the
representation of helmholtz?s sound-wave theories by
the early soundfield artists (niblock, young,
palestine, etc.) conrad has written about the
chromaccord in leonardo: journal of art and science.
ian nagoski "really rips with some higher-mind
electronics, brutal and unsophisticated on one hand,
beautiful and truly elevating on the other. listening
to this is like examining fractal images through a
microscope - you'll lose your sense of self.? - bruce
russell
:::0's:::
it's zero's not Oh's just so ya know. 0's are a new
collaborative force out of chicago involving the
interaction between live instruments and computer. the
band includes brent gutzeit of tv pow(who play sunday)
on pc... dave williams on guitar/sampler, who is known
around chicago as the editor of the fabulous magazine
8X10... and lastly rob lomblad on drums, rob is a
veteran of many fine chicago jangle-pop bands(lanky
lanky lanky and shambly to name two). their set is
100% improvised, and can shift from the loud rumble of
mezbow to the quiet introspectiveness of amm of
bernhard gunter in seconds.
:::diskette:::
man about town chris coady's electronic project
diskette has been steadily picking up steam over the
last 6 or so months. With frequent gigs in baltimore
and dc opening for the likes of feotus, oval, cex and
a short tour with the convocation of..., diskette has
been winning over audiences with his unique brand of
jagged beats and cut-ups. similar in vein to autechre,
richard devine and push button objects.
:::mora:::
minuscule sounds brought to life! often times
concentrating on the micro-sound worlds of small
objects, more's contact mic-ed improvisations take the
listener places they never would have imagined. also
from chicago mora is jason soliday and philip von
zweck, both members of chicago experimentalists
seafoam. von zweck is also the host of the nationally
known experimental radio show "something else".
:::twine:::
after a self releasing a cd and loading the web with
their mp3's, twine finally received their break when
chicago label hefty(run by john hughes III) reeled
them in to do a 12". ohio-ans greg malcolm and chad
mossholder have since been on a roll, releasing a cd
of loops for pc's acid program, a full-length on
komplott of sweden and another hefty ep due soon.
their sound is a fusion of noise and melody. similar
to fennesz more melodic work or vert's "koln konzert".
they also come equipped with an amazing video
show..... not to be missed.
:::while:::
baltimore's best kept secret is electronic musician
chris moore aka while. with two ep's and one
full-length out in the last three months on chicago
label chocolate industries, one would think more
attention would have been paid. well it has! in
international press, rave reviews have been rolling in
from all over, with magazine such as Alternative Press
and The Wire gushing over while's new releases. this
is while's first ever baltimore show, and only his
second ever period!
fun right? that's day one::::here's day two!

welsch creates detailed ambient layers/loops that
intersect drone wash guitar.

chicago transplant jason urick is the sole member of
themoonstealingproject and is also the organizer of

soup.
:::backbreakerneckbrace:::
michael haleta is a graphic design senior at the
maryland institute college of art (also studying web-
and sound-design). michael studied cello and
composition under multi- instrumentalist eric
haltmeier (former student of ellery eskelin). when he
isn?t constructing typefaces, michael is either
composing music for his electronic project
backbreakerneckbrace or playing guitar in the
baltimore math-rock band the french mistake.
:::tv pow:::
tv pow is brent gutzeit, mike hartman and todd carter.
the three met at college in kalamazoo, mi. before
reuniting in japan to form tv pow. at the time the
"band" was using electric koto, drums and 20-string
steel bass. the trio moved back to chicago in 1997 and
evolved into a laptop band. the years since returning
from japan has seen the members; starting two record
labels(boxmedia and gentle giant), releasing albums as
a group on staalplaat, and boxmedia , releasing solo
records and appearing on comps on lucky kitchen,
kranky, staalplaat and field recordings, as well as
touring europe once and japan four times.
:::andreas berthling:::
andreas in a swedish composer working within the area
or sound phenomenon. his recordings are starkly
beautiful, very much in the way ryoji ikeda or
cristoph charles are. this is one of only a few dates
in andreas' first ever u.s. tour.

weekend, once.twice will include two video/film
