Speaking of These, what are the members of This Heat up to these days?
i bought the Kev Hopper record last week, on drag city... he's the "musical
saw" guy on stereolab/hi-llamas records. charles hayward played some
percussion on a track. really good album.
God, i love This Heat. allow me to wax nostalgic for a moment: that album
"Made Available" is the apotheosis of aggressive, immediate guitar rock run
through the filters of dub and 20th century composition. and i LOATHE
aggressive guitar rock. that first track "horizontal hold" made me want to
start a band (yes, i did follow through), and the rest of the songs are
totally fantastic. everyone should own that record. plus the "health and
efficiency" 3 in ch cd.
there's a journal called "Sound Collector" whose almost-latest installment
featured a long article by charles hayward, who narrates the history of This
Heat, genesis to revelation. with photos.!
Perhaps an additional question: what would ppl recommend as a good
starting-point for AMM?
the "crypt" album is tops, plus it has cornelius cardew (extra historical
bonus). "lamminal" is very good, but it's 3 cds and keith rowe gets a
little carried away with the transistor radio broadcasts. I dig the album
with the giant stalactite on the cover (inexhaustible document?); it's
newer, but great for cello & electronix; totally amorphous, dynamic stuff.
