CADE 2001 / UPSAMPLE / Exhibition of Interactive Soundworks
The exhibition addresses the CADE 2001 conference themes of working across
creative disciplines and
subject areas in that it is concerned with a body of practice which is
essentially cross-media. It
complements and extends the CADE tradition of exhibiting digital media
artworks in the ArCade
exhibition.
The exhibition will take place from 9th 12th April 2001, in the Glasgow
School of Art.
Overview
Sonic arts practices have developed rapidly in recent years. In part this
can be attributed to
broader cultural movements that include the work of avant garde and pop
musicians and sound artists
working across and within diverse traditions and musics. In part it is the
result of the
opportunities for sound sampling and manipulation offered by affordable and
increasingly accessible
digital technologies.
A particular body of work within sonic arts enables a reader/player/user to
intervene in the work
perhaps to remix tracks, perhaps to navigate soundscapes, perhaps to
manipulate samples. These
interactive sonic artworks represent an area of practice that crosses
traditional boundaries and
discipline structures and which addresses broader cultural issues of agency
and immersion within
interactive media and about our changing relationship with information.
This is to be an exhibition of interactive sonic artworks which are
primarily concerned with the
user/player/readers' interactive construction of sound on an intimate scale
(one-to-one,
one-to-few, not performance to audience). Some of these may be based in
standalone equipment, some
may be distributed network artefacts requiring internet/WWW connections,
others may be small scale
installation(s). Some works may operate within the mouse/keyboard/monitor
paradigm, others may
employ novel constructed interface devices.
Resources required
Equipment and facilities are available for the following:
- standalone works using Windows and/or MacOS platforms (with small
speakers or headphones)
- www presentations (through live internet connections)
- installation and novel interface devices supplied by their creators
Please give details on the particular requirements of your work.
Submissions
Submissions are welcomed from students, academic staff and practitioners
working nationally and
internationally in a wide field (Art and Design, Music Technology, Media
Technologies, Computer
Sciences, Performing Arts, etc.).
Submissions should be in the form of CDs (audio or interactive), web URLs,
and / or proposals for
installations / devices.
The deadline for submissions is March 22nd 2001. Submissions will be sifted
by the curators, and a
representative body of 15 - 20 works selected. Exhibitors will be informed
of the outcome before
March 29th. All selected works to be delivered to University of
Hertfordshire by 5th April 2001.
