well, in the hands of a proficient musician a computer
can add to an ensemble sounds/textures that could not
be achieved with other instrumentation. like a guitar
can also do. as an instrument a computer can obviously
not replicate what a guitar/saxophone/oboe.... can do.
but instead can add another element that the other
instruments in an ensemble can react to, and visa
versa.

it all depends on what an ensemble is trying to
accomplish sound-wise. a computer can't react(as an a
sound renderer) to chord progression X-Y-Z with a
complimenatary chord progression. but in the hands of
an able user with an ensemble that is comfortable
playing together(wether it is chemistry in a first
meeting or a long standing collaboration) a computer
can react to said progression in a number of ways that
will add to the overall effect of the piece. AMM often
in performance uses transistor radio as part of the
set. i wonder how you feel about it's place within
their ensemble. is it of less value than the
guitar/piano/drums within the piece?
