MICRO 2 : MICROSOUNDS and OACIS
Digital variations on a minimalist note
Montreal, March 27th, 2001 - MICRO 2 is the second offering of a series of
special evenings prepared as an appetizer to the next edition of MUTEK.
Presented by Ex-Centris, MICRO 2 will propose two evenings of new media
performances featuring many of the artists that have marked the 2000 edition
of MUTEK. On Friday April 6 at 9PM, the multimedia theater of Ex-Centris
(3536 St-Laurent blvd.) will host the microscopic sounds of American artists
Kim Cascone, Taylor Deupree and Richard Chartier. On Saturday April 7 at
9PM, in the same theater, the German collective Raster-Noton, represented by
Carsten Nicolai, Olaf Bender and Frank Bretschneider, will present their new
project OACIS.
Presented by Ex-Centris, MUTEK is an annual event dedicated to cutting edge
electronic music and sound creation in the age of digital tools and new
media. The second edition of MUTEK will take place in Montreal from May 30th
to June 3rd, 2001. The program will be officially unveiled during a press
conference on May 2nd, 2001.
MICROSOUNDS - April 6
Taylor Deupree, musician and graphic designer living in New York, is more
and more absorbed in his research of musical compositions characterized by
their microscopic tones and hyper-synthetic textures, thus coined
Microsound. In 1997, he founded the 12K label to bring together other
artists who share his interest. He is best known for his experiments in
ambient and electronic music under names such Prototype 909, SETI, Human
Mesh Dance and Futique. First introduced to the Montreal public during the
ARCHITETTURA evening at MUTEK, last June, Deupree will return to Ex-Centris
to improvise a set containing fragments of his recordings from the past,
present, and future. Some of these sounds will be recognizable from his
recordings on 12K and Ritornell, others will be from his upcoming cd Occur
and others still will be created on the spot. This mixing and layering of
microscopic sounds will be augmented by a real time midi-controlled digital
projection, custom designed by Mark Fell (snd), consisting of thin rhythmic
lines and colours that echo the textures of Taylor's music.
Working along similar lines, Richard Chartier, minimalist sound artist,
painter and graphic designer, explores the relationship between sound,
silence and the art of listening. In September 2000, he launched LINE with
Taylor Deupree, a 12K sublabel focusing on new, digital, conceptual,
ultra-minimalist sound art. Richard Chartier has recorded for many labels
such as Meme (Japan), Fallt (Ireland), Microwave (The Netherlands),
Intransitive Recordings (USA) and LINE (USA).
The evening will end with Dust Theories, a work-in-progress by Kim Cascone
during which he navigates through a constructed "search" space inspired by
genetic algorithms and a-life techniques. His concept is also an extension
of the idea of "residualism" where he uses material that was left behind or
tossed aside after use. Cascone has a long history involving electronic
music: after he received his training at the Berklee College of Music and at
the New School in New York City, he worked with David Lynch as Assistant
Music Editor on both Twin Peaks and Wild at Heart. He founded Silent Records
in 1986 and at the height of its success, in early 1996, he sold the company
to pursue his love of sound design and went to work for Thomas Dolby's
company Headspace as a sound designer and composer. Currently he is working
for Staccato Systems as Director of Content where he oversees the design of
new sounds for games using algorithmic synthesis. Since 1980, Kim has
released more than 15 albums of electronic music and has worked as a
collaborator and producer on numerous projects including Nurse With Wound
and Merzbow among others. MICRO_2 will mark the first public presentation of
Cascone's work in Montreal. The visual aspect of the performance will
consist of experimental video created by Kathleen Cascone.
OACIS - April 7
The evening signed by the artists of the Raster-Noton collective during the
last MUTEK was without any doubt the discovery and surprise of the event.
They return to present OACIS - Optics Acoustics Calculated In Seconds, a new
offering of their minimalist and clinical sound and visual compositions.
Inspired by a book of the same name edited by Raster-Noton, OACIS will
reveal a new aspect of their interest in the interaction between sound and
visuals, presenting their working models on the cutting edge of electronic
music, art and serial production.
NOTO - Carsten Nicolai is a visual artist and musician. His work takes on
multiple forms - paintings, installations, performances and recordings - and
has brought him to numerous exhibits around the world. His music, minimal
and meticulous, lingers on the microscopic errors generated by machines. The
purity of his recordings and their lyrical and humanist characteristics
announce a new era of contemporary minimalist music falling between
post-techno and conceptual sound art.
KOMET - Frank Bretschneider creates music that relies on the experimentation
and management of accidental sound instances. Having studied graphic design
and painting, he has developed a visual way of composing music, which
emerges into expressive, though minimalist, miniatures. He has many releases
on different labels such as Mille Plateaux, 12 K, Audio NL.
BYETONE - Olaf Bender, along with Carsten Nicolai, is co-founder of the
label Raster-Noton. His current set puts hooklines and ostinating basslines
of the seventies into the abstract field of the typical Raster-Noton sound:
« Fragmented hooks get more space to develop and therefore another
character. Straightening out the sound spectrum is not of immediate
importance - it's more about groove, about several sound particles within
the tracks ».
