bernhard guenter microexperiences/events
The only Gunter release I have is Time, Dreaming Itself, which is not a
>good album to start on. I like the interaction between sound and silence
>in the work, but I think I would appreciate it much more if I understood,
>at least to an extent, the process which he used to create it... can
>anyone comment on this?
You should definitely check out his website www.bernhardguenter.net or his
label to get a good background on his work. I don't see how any of his
releases could be a good introduction; they are all extremely discrete.
When I first heard a piece off Un peu de neige salie I was mesmerized, my
attention was totally grabbed. When I bought the CD, the effect was really
different, and I had a harder time keeping my attention on the work itself.
It's all very subjective, I suppose, but with a lot of this music I try to
listen to it in different environments, situations and systems. On my old
marantz stereo amp, on my computer speakers, in my discman, through my
4-track. At work, in the park, in the library. Gunter's sound is especially
striking when you play with it in that fashion, which is interesting since
when he performs, much of the effort involved is not the performance
itself, but setting up the original sound system
to communicate as closely as possible the original impression of a work
which exists strictly as a recorded piece of sound in a different
environment. As much
as I like the accompanying visuals often put with these microtonal works,
the best ones are those, in my opinion, which bring out the image without
the visual companion. In fact, I "saw" Francisco Lopez perform with a
blindfold on, and it was the most enveloping performance i've ever
attended. Bernhard Gunter's work must be fantastic in a live performance.
Does anybody know if he uses visuals in concert? I personally like to see
the sound coming out of the speakers.
