sampling rage micro-review

podewil,
berlin, june 14th.

10 sets - 9 sounders - 2 pauses - what a wonderful night!
here were my fav 3.

brandon labelle (20 min. set)........
this was sweet !
a video camera placed,
about 15-feet high in the air,
right outside the building,
close to the back stage door
captured images
(in real-time)
from a bird's eye view
of the sidewalk & cobblestone street,
which was more or less null in action.
all exterior images were projected
on the screen on the stage.
sound started with him placing
some piezo-ed wine glasses
upside down in front of the stage
with tiny motors inside each one.
a lite rich hollow hum.
then quiet slow delays came in like the
sounds of a professional
smoke-ring blower,
later pre-recorded prank telephone calls
worked their way in to the texture, "hello ....hello....hello"
(i know, we all did it in grade school,
but he used it very nicely - uneffected).
later he left through
the back stage door
with a wine bottle piezo-ed
& a md hooked up to it.
he dragged the bottle
through the streets
for a few minutes,
his image briefly passes
in the live-projection
on the screen on stage.
(walking under the camera outside)
inside, the "smoke-ring" delays
(for lack of a more suitable word)
and phone still going - building slowly.
later he returns to the stage,
hooks up the md to the mixer
and plays with the bottle
sounds he just recorded.
this is where the 'mini-fireworks'
really started. a few minutes with that,
then he takes the wine glasses off of the motors,
placed in front of the stage and it's over.
pure simplicity + wonderful technique,
make for quite a learning experience.

boris d. hegenbart (8 min.set) ......
a young german man - new to me.
intriguing playing style. soft fuzz/static?
fm whatchamacallits ?
hand-pressure on a vibrating object
seemed to control some of the sounds.
hope to see this guy again soon.
great set, but too short.
left me yearning.

steve roden (20 min. set)........
like the sounds of your grandparents knees
with contact mics on them.
he sat at a small table full of objets,
mixer, cords, mics...
the blowing into the papercup
with contact mic was superb.

anyway...
i thought it was worth the money!
congratulations to the participants & podewil !

later
kelly
