rafael toral tour 2001
transmissions is very excited to announce rafael toral's
2001 tour ::
Rafael Toral is a musician, producer and sound engineer.
Born in Lisbon in 1967, he has been performing live since
1984. Considered by the Chicago Reader to be "one of the
most gifted and innovative guitarists of the decade", his
work focuses mainly on the possibilities of ambient music
(variable attention listening process), the electric guitar
as a sound generator and improvisation with higher levels
of risk (using instruments or systems that behave in
unpredictable ways) in real time sonic exploration.

this tour will include a us premiere performance
of a recent piece called "Engine". in its original
version, "Engine" utilizes two guitars and a bass,
a stereo amp and speakers (for feedback with the
guitars), motors on the strings, a mixer, an analog
modular system and a host of effects.
toral has prepared a "portable" version of the piece,
with electronic feedback instead of electro-acoustic,
using only the modular system and mixer, with the
motor sounds on minidisc. the majority of the sounds
will be generated by empty circuits oscillating on
their own and modulated by the modular's devices.
it will be played on two independent circuits, akin to
playing two versions of the piece simultaneously,
one in the left channel and the other on the right.
