Pulsar Generator
Hey folks,
Just got out of the second day of the Curtis Roads presentation at CCMix. It
was the best presentation of the program although first day he talked on a real
basic technical level about granular synthesis (cloud generator), convolution,
and some electronic music history. There are several in the class that are not
too informed on the technical side of things, so it fit in, but I left with
a lacking impression the first day. He did present convolution in a way that I
have not had experience with so it was informational. IE I never though
about using whitenoise to create a reverb through convolution or the fact that
you can create convolved rhythms with an impulse response that just contains
single impulses in the infrasonic domain (IE sub 20hz).
Those with Macs; do check out the Pulsar Generator released in March (damn you
all). It will be appearing in several audio mags this or next month. It is
neat. Check out the CREATE website (www.create.ucsb.edu). I could chat on about
all this, but I am using Pine and things are slow. Convolution really comes
into play with the output of the Pulsar Generator.
Curtis mentioned that Kim Cascone has been using it. Kim, any material using it
in particular?
I did get a decent chat with Curtis and will be detailing my whole experience
when I get back.. Curtis and other faculty at UCSB have some amazing plans for
the program. They are planning to have two new facilities for multimedia
research and performance built by 2005 and a PhD program by 2003. Definitely a
place to look into in a couple of years..
I found a great shop in Paris called the Wave. Has a decent amount of material
and all of it can be listened to before buying! (YES!) I will have a crazy set
ready for Madrid (That party is going though as far as I know).

I am going to make it to Amsterdam this weekend; besides Staalplat anyone have
any recommendations? Feel free to list some techno oriented stores.
Thanks,
