Re: [microsound] confield

better late than never: I just got the latest offering by Autechre and was
wondering what others on this list thought of it (sorry if I missed the
confield thread)...

it sort of make sense that they would release something like this if you listen to ep 7.x. while it's not the most soothing of autechre records, IMHO it IS quite good. it just takes a little getting used to. at first i thought that it was quite bad and that if it wasn't autechre it wouldn't have gotten released, but i put my opinion on hold and gave it a few listens. after the second listen i started to understand where they were coming from.

(side note: the track on the phonecia 'odd jobs' 12" is a precursor to this album - which is hard to follow while listening to in speakers, but make total sense in headphones.)

perhaps it's a commentary on the present state of beat based electronic music. perhaps they are laughing hysterically as we type that we are looking so deeply into this record and trying to discern their mental state while they twiddled their 'kyma'.

I find most of it to be little more than a peek into their Kyma sound
library with some electron microscope graphics and 8.3 DOS sounding titles
slapped on the cover...this aesthetic posture is getting kinda tired, no?

give me a break. it's their style. what i think you are tired of is all of the people that have ripped them off and made the stuff so common place.

of all the people on this list that are into theory, the creation of product and the intellectual aspect of
composing music using machines and electronic, the last person i expected to totally slam autechre is you kim.

with all of your experimenting with sounds, creating software and writing coding, are you saying that everything that you try to achieve is totally on point and that you totally nail it every time? i don't think anybody does. what would you have said if they released another ep7? that they fell back on their laurels and just cranked out the same old stuff again? we probably would have thought it because we have all come to expect so much from them.

I still like the Choc Ind roster better for fuct up digitalia...

i know i'd rather listen to confield then a lot of other cd's sitting in my cd rack.

perhaps in 5 years we will all be looking back on confield and saying NOW i understand. Sheeeet! it only took me 5 years! then again, perhaps not.
