How could Bach appreciate the Beatles? This thread reminds me of my attempts 
to translate the tao te ching in college, the characters on the silks from 
the mawangdui han tombs have little meaning without an extensive study of 
the historical context.

The five colours make people's eyes blind;
Galloping and hunting make people's heart go wild;

The five flavours make people's mouth numb;
The five notes make people's ears deaf;
