Linux preferred as Windows seems less efficient in certain circumstances.
There has been a study done comparing a few operating systems and Linux and
MacOS X scored the highest. I can provide the link (I don't have it handy
now) if anyone's interested.

SuperCollider.

PD's userbase is growing. If I'm not mistaken it even is already a part of
Debian linux distribution and for sure a part of DelMudi
(http://gige.xdv.org/pages/DeMuDi) project which is Debian based Linux
distribution for musicians and multimedia artists.

But it's true that PD takes a while to learn. So does Max. Non-programmer
will take a little longer but not by much.

hope this helps.
