Tibook Audio Input Issues

I upgraded to a titanium macintosh powerbook and of course there is no built
in sound input. I purchased the Griffin iMic which works OK except...

  1. I use my powerbook to process sounds live -- they come into the iMic,
get processed by a MAX/MSP standalone and come out of the iMic or the
built-in headphone output. There is a serious latency issue which is really
annoying when I am trying to do this in a live situation.

  2. With the old powerbook I could simultaneously output both the sounds
being processed by the MAX/MSP delay app AND sounds generated or played from
other software (mp3 players, software synths, etc.). With the iMic I can
only output one or the other -- not both.

I need to figure out if I am doing something wrong when using the iMic
--OR-- get a better piece of hardware that will allow me to do what I want
to do (PCMCIA card?). I'd love to find a cheap solution, but if I have to
spend the money then so be it. Can anyone help me?
