re: Transmissions Festival in Chicago

I don't know many people who could afford to go to many of the shows.
Ticket prices were truly ridiculous. Shame on both the promoters and the
artists. You'd think with big money sponsors like 'The WIRE' and 'C74'
things would be alittle better ;)

Microsound = Ex-ravers trying to disguise themselves as the avant garde.
Can't fool us.

first of all my expenses (EXPENSES, not my fee) came close to $700 that the
staff of this festival paid, and i came only from los angeles. there were
artists at the festival from europe and japan, as well as all over the
states and even canada - with over 20 artists involved, who all needed to be
flown in and put up as well as certainly some of the bigger folks demanding
a specific 'fee to perform', you have to figure the folks who put on this
festival spent a ton of money on this. - it was clearly done as a labor of
love not a money making venture. we all were picked up at the airport,
driven to radio interviews, gigs, etc. all of this costs money - gas, food,
phone calls... they also had to rent out clubs, print flyers, a beautiful
brochure, etc. these people all have day jobs they were taking time off
of... you've gotta be kidding me complaining about someone charging too much
with all the work and cash they must've put into this.
the generic term 'sponsor' means someone could've given them $50. the event
must've cost in the tens of thousands.
it would be nice to be able to exist simply to supply you with free music -
but of course, there would be no way i personally could have flown to
chicago to perform with an out of pocket expense of $700!

to bash something like this where ticket prices were totally realistic or in
fact rather reasonable in terms of what was being offered is ridiculous. i
certainly understand that some people can't afford $15 for a concert, and i
also understand that some people can't even afford $3 for a concert. but
that doesn't mean the price is unreasonable. this even certainly was not
about the artists or the promoters simply making money...

the people who put this thing together worked their asses off to provide a
great atmosphere (most of the events had free food available - one night
free beer, and the opening evening was pretty much a free feast - and all of
the food was made at home, not from a restaurant - an incredible amount of
time energy and grocery bills... and it tasted great too!!!!).

it was an absolutely incredible event - both musically and in terms of all
the great people who participated - and i might add that everyone who was
there certainly seemed to enjoy it.

with regards to this:

"Microsound = Ex-ravers trying to disguise themselves as the avant garde.
Can't fool us."

never been a microsounder, never been an ex-raver (too old), and never
disguised myself as anything (what does avant garde look like?). it was
really just a bunch of people interested in sound, performing their works,
talking about music and having a rather good time - i guess that's why they
call it a festival...:-)
