In the name of accuracy... in this model 'life' = cognitive dissonance and
'what you make it' = the assumption that your psyche will require you to
rationalize the dissonance to diminish one half of it to make your 'life'
less dissonant. The model is predicated on the thought process modifying
itself to match a behavior, not the other way around. Festinger discovered
in 1959 that people will actually be more satisfied with mundane jobs if
they are paid less because their own internal rationalization is stronger
and more meanful than external justifications. The unconcious human mind
will always take the path of least resistance in order to reduce cognitive
dissonance, regardless of how detrimental it might be to the organism's
survival. The so-called 'survival instinct' is superceded by human
cognition.
