 Tannoy stuff is always reliable , especially if you can find the
axis-coherent co-axials for a reasonable price. Some times magna pans or
magna planars can be  acquired inexpensively, they might be really good for
larger installations , especially with a subwoofer of some sort.
For super- inexpensive near field monitors some of the better car stereo
co-axials mounted in a homemade cabinet can work surprisingly well-( not the
oval ones, please)
 though it helps if you have a really good power amp( ramsa WP 9440. weighs
half a ton beautifully tight low end and puts out enough power to blow most
speakers to smithereens- - )  .
