MAK CENTER PRESENTS 3rd ANNUAL
FREE COMMUNITY DAY

"Site and Sound" to Focus on Interplay of
Sound and Architecture

The MAK Center for Art and Architecture, L.A. presents its third annual free
"open house" on Saturday, September 8, 2001 from 11 a.m. to
6 p.m. Entitled Site and Sound, MAK Day is organized around the theme that
informed recent programming at the Schindler House, the interplay between
experimental sound and architecture. MAK Day provides an opportunity for
both children and adults to personally experience acoustical principles and
experimental music-making, joining leading sound artists Anna Homler,
Brandon LaBelle and Steve Roden in site-specific activities.

At 1:00 p.m., "The Sound Kitchen," an interactive family workshop, is
offered by sound artist and educator Anna Homler. The hands-on workshop
explores the musical capabilities in everyday objects and culminates in
music games with readily-made instruments that engage the unique acoustics
of the Schindler House.

At 3:00 p.m., Brandon LaBelle, sound artist and curator of the Beyond Music
Festival at Beyond Baroque, presents a lecture in the outdoor courtyard.
In "An Idiosyncratic History of Experimental Sound," LaBelle explores the
evolution of experimental sound, using sound samples to illustrate the talk.

Rounding out the day, Site and Sound ends with a site-specific sound concert
at 5 p.m., performed by Steve Roden, a visual and sound artist. Roden has
worked with the aural environment of the Schindler House, preparing sound
installations for the summer exhibition, In Between: Outdoors. These works
will remain on display to be heard and experienced at MAK Day. For this
improvised concert, Roden creates an extemporaneous soundscape, utilizing
the Schindler House itself as "raw material."

Admission to Site and Sound, the 3rd annual MAK Day, is free. The Schindler
House is located at 835 N. Kings Road in West Hollywood. Parking is
available at the West Hollywood public garage at the northeast corner of
Kings Road and Santa Monica Boulevard. For further information, the public
may contact www.MAKcenter.com or (323) 651-1510.
