Electronic

BOVINE LIFE
-social electrics (bleep 06 / Bip hop) CD SFr 27.-
Award winning UK film maker / digital artist Chris Dooks was known for his film work
on musicians such as Scanner for The South Bank Show, to tiny
bedroom labels in the middle of nowhere. His first album introduces some solo works,
and besides some collaborations with Kohn, Third Eye
Foundation, Future Pilot Aka, and artists from labels such as Mego (Alku), Leaf
(Ylyptyk), Janek Schaefer, Diskono... If you've ever been put on hold,
you'll know that the tune they play down the telephone is a waste of
telecommunications! Not so with Chris?s modem adventures. Bovine Life has been
jamming through the modem, speaking in electronic tongues, secreting sounds that vary
from being immersed in amniotic fluid, right through to searing
bleeps that would make any nation stand to attention ! Enhanced CD features a short
movie by Chris Dooks.
What an excellent release on the growing French Bip-hop label, releasing more and
more interesting record. Bovine life's music is somewhere between
analog, computer and a kind of enigmatic electronic music. This is clever,
interesting, unusual, original, and at the same time very relaxing and enjoyable.
A very rich and innovative release in the field of electronic music. Recommended.

COMMERCIAL
-s/t (Darla) CD SFr 27.- / LP SFr 22.50
COMMERCIAL is the new abstract electronic pop studio album from pop stars TREVOR
HOLLAND and SEAN FLOWCHART. This collaboration is an all
instrumental affair full of clever beats, playful breaks, found digital sounds, and
unexpected twists and turns. In these ten new experimental songs
backed with electro and jungle beats there's tons of irreverence, humor and
unexpected goings on. They are like intelligent, playful, children's music,
music for cartoons or computer games, always done with a smile and wink. Somewhere
between pop, electronic, with a great dance cheap touch.

DIRTY THROAT
-Genetically modified organism (sr-003 / Self records) CD-R 18.-
"Genetically modified organism" is the first self release album by Dirty Throat, a
one man project by this Lausanne-based artist. Dirty Throat explores a
complex world of dark moods, trashy and glauque atmospheres, experimental sounds,
sombre ambiences,.... built up with deconstructed hip hop beats,
electronic distorted loops, sound manipulations, scratch and abrasive sounds,
abstract drones,.... for fans of Scorn, Dither,.... Check it out.

F.S. BLUMM
-mondkuchen (morr.021 / Morr music) CD SFr 27.- / LP SFr 23.-
On his debut release on Morr music, Frank Schültge aka F.S. Blumm presents a
multitude of lovely popsongs and atmospheric soundscapes.
Mondkuchen seems like a colorful picture transformed into music, telling little
stories in many layers. Its tension covers a wide field from crushed
acoustic sound experiments to perfect pop tunes. The discography of F.S. Blumm
reaches back into 1993 and maybe one knows the releases of Sack
& Blumm on the Cologne-based labels Staubgold or Tom.
Ingredients of his soundkitchen are mainly acoustic instruments like piano, kalimba,
vibes or guitars or more rare ones like e.g. an accordion. The
musical result is in a way original, so that the popular namedropping doesn´t help
that much to describe F.S. Blumm´s music.
F.S. Blumm works with melodious sound, with deep buried memories and inner-mind
visions but at the same time his music is determined by timeless
elegance and an amazing facility. The correlation of different instruments and
beautiful simple melodies rule the sound. experimental ideas just
communicate with accessible and friendly music and Mondkuchen is a good example to
show how deep this combination can be without loosing
tension and humour.

FINGERNAIL
-So, Backwards (fuz-014 / drl-078 / Fuzzy Box / Darla) CD SFr 26.- / LP SFr 22.-
"This is the otherworldly, beat laden, pop-ambient-electronic debut of Fingernail AKA
20 year old Adam DiAngelo of Philadelphia. This is a very queer
and instantly lovable instrumental album. Most striking is the simple elegance,
fluidity and cohesion of its curious composition. Its subtle humor and mood
are similar to Aphex Twin or a darker Tomorrowland with strong beat programming
abilities, or a prettier and more passionate Autechre. Ghosts of Eno,
Kraftwerk, LFO all haunt the mix playfully. Adam says he's known to shun human
contact, and prefers instead to make his chilly brand of ambient
Electro alone in the basement with the aid of his blinking machines. The sounds he
produces are as fresh and smooth as his complexion. You can hear
that he's been hard at work for many years".

FINGERNAIL
-Versions (fuz-019 / Fuzzy Box) CD SFr 27.- / 2xLP SFr 27.-
'Versions' is possibly one of the greatest electronicambient/experimental remix
albums of all time with an amazing line-up of remixers from renowned
experimental labels including Warp and Rephlex. The remixes are all of previously
released tracks from Fingernail's debut CD/LP, 'So, Backwards.' 'So,
Backwards,' released earlier this year on Fuzzy Box, is serene and sinister with
subtle humor, moodswings, and programming comparable to Aphex
Twin or Autechre, while the complexity of the in-depth melodies parallels early
classical composer, Maurice Ravel. This list of remixers is as follows :
WOODENSPOON (aka Disjecta, Mark Clifford, Seefeel - Warp Records, Too Pure), GLOBAL
GOON (aka Spider - Rephlex Records), BOCHUM WELT
(Rephlex Records, Sony Music Japan, Fuzzy Box Records), CATHARS (aka Kurt Ralske of
Ultra Vivid Scene), JUNIOR VARSITY KM (Darla Records),
FLOWCHART (aka Flowtron - 611 Records, Darla Records, Endorphin Records), EXHALERA
DECK (aka Accelera Deck - Pitch Cadet Records,
Endorphin Records), BOB BROWN (Hidden Agenda Records, Framework Recordings), TLEILAXU
(aka DJ Crasta - Fuzzy Box) vs. EDK (aka Sloppy,
Pathfinders - Plastic City), OCTAROCK (aka Magnet F - Casa De Toad Records, Doubtful
Productions), QUASIMOJO (Casa De Toad Records), BLINK
BLINK (Doubtful Productions, The Blind[tm] Organization), FINGERNAIL (Fuzzy Box
Records, Doubtful Productions). This is a one-of-a-kind release that
stands apart from your average remix album, and all the individual remixes
brilliantly flow from track to track. So enjoy the range of ambient tension and
schizophrenic beat programming, and realize what Fuzzy Box is all about.

post-ambient-electronic music. Round linear ambient sounds meet soft rhythms

ISAN
-lucky cat (morr.022 / Morr music) CD SFr 27.- / 2xLP SFr 27.-
Isan love old analogue electronic devices to make music, instruments from a time when
synthesizers were developed in attics; when air-conditioned
offices, where hundreds of coding-slaves would program new organ-presets, were still
an unknown phenomena.
Synthesizers and drumboxes which were affordable even when they were manufactured and
which rockbands with mellotrons and modular walls
laughed at. Over the last few years, Robin and Antony Isan proved that these machines
are capable of great things too. with numerous releases -
preferably on 7" of course - they managed to book reservations for front row seats in
our record racks. Little melodies appear, dragging you along on
their journey towards dawn, slowly unveiling their real inner-self, and banishing
evil ghosts. 'Lucky cat' starts where 'Salamander', Isan's previous
album on Morr music, stopped. In a way, it is completely different, you must listen
to it for yourself. It is just that everything sounds more self-evident,
lighter, more familiar, more personal and especially more lovable and adorable. A
definitely brilliant warm and melodic analog electronic release, the best
in the genre for sure. Recommended.

ISAN
-Digitalis (Darla) CD SFr 27.-
"English duo of Robin Saville and Antony Ryan make beautiful sounds, picking up their
signals from deep space, like pulse coded informational rhythmic
tone clusters of synthetic extraterrestrial folk music of cellular activities,
breathing, bubbling, and fizzing with life. All instrumental, seven tracks,
bringing to mind; Cluster, Microstoria, To Rocco Rot, and even grand daddies
Kraftwerk. -- George Parsons, DREAM Magazine At home. The
synthesizer sounds great, warm, embracing, lively, almost alive. But what's that
noise, that strange hiss? You open up the main wooden cabinet. You
suddenly relalize that this synthesizer once was alive. It used to be a bug's family
living room. The hiss and the buzz is caused by, now long dead, little
bug kids who glued themselves to the filter circuits and who tried to play table
tennis on the A-C-adaptor. "Should I clean the inside? Should I get rid of
the cracklings?," you ask yourself. No way, you like what you hear. This keyboard is
alive. It?s good that way. You close the door and start recording...
If our mutual friend found beetles in his synth, ISAN'S equipment must be inhabited
by proper salamanders, pattering constantly over circuits, stumbling
over wires. Robin and Toe, the two mates operating this 'Integrated Services Analogue
Network' (ISAN), appreciate the salamander's help and
dedicated this whole album to their little friend. A couple of years ago, they both
met in Leicester, discovered a common interest in "using dodgy old
keyboards to make a dodgy old noise" and started recording together. Mixing the
simple beauty of melodies generated with analogue keyboards and the
bumpy, quirky rhythms old drum machines create when you switch them on, ISAN produce
some of the most irresistible pop anthems the whole family
can hum along to".

MANITOBA
-Start Breaking My Heart (bay16cd / Leaf) CD SFr 27.- / LP SFr 23.-
Now available on vinyl. The long awaited full album by Canadian artist Manitoba who
already released two beautiful 12" on the Leaf label. "Arcs of
rainbow melody, hopscotch percussion patterns, and playground children laughing.
Humanity and nature are strong threads through this album : beauty
and mystery are revealed in the mundane and ordinary. It's kind of a distillation of
those rare moments when you look around and feel a strange glow of
contentment - some friends called over unexpectedly, your room is tidy for once and
not strewn with leftover apple cores, banana skins and orange
peel. And it was a nice day for record shopping. Things could be worse, but they're
not".
"Dan plays guitars and keyboards, preferring to record a melody straight up than
sample someone else's, combining these basic elements with
computer trickery. It gives the album an electronic~organic feel, warm but with a
slightly uptight twitch, like you know he's going to produce some really
banging dancefloor track one day". Beautiful electronic music with magic melodies,
organic sounds, warm atmospheres,.... vinyl version coming soon.
Recommended.

MúM
-please smile my noise bleed (morr.020 / Morr music) CD SFr 27.- / LP SFr 23.-
Múm is an electronic quartet from Iceland, who after some records (on Tugboat, Fat
Cat) finally release a wonderful album on the German Morr music
label. Their music just fit completely in the Morr music pop-electronic style, but
this is still different from the other Morr music releases, Múm's music add
a new important dimension in the Morr music empire. This is at the same time warm,
beautiful, intimate, cold, atmospheric, delicate, melodic, extremely
fragile, lovely and very entertaining.
Two songs by Múm with remixes by Styrofoam, Isan, Phonem, Christian Kleine, Arovane
and B. Fleischmann.
