Post-rock / Rock

A SEASON DRIVE
-Falling (aer-002cd / gtl 002-2 / Aerinsk / Gentlemen) CD SFr 25.-
A Season Drive is the solo project of Shovel's ex drummer, Frank (but the music has
absolutely nothing to do with the music of Shovel). In July 2000, he
deceided to start this project to make music on his own and to produce good rock
music as he likes. Once the compositions finished, the album was
recorded during October and November 2000, playing himself all the instruments
(drums, guitars, voice, organ, piano), with the help of some
guests/friends playing bass, cello, violin on some songs. The album was finished late
January and has been called "Falling". This album ranges from
acoustic rock songs to more indie-rocking tracks, to emo-rock,.... Acoustic rhythmic
guitars meet fragile electric guitar melodies, intense and precise
drum patterns, while some beautiful cello and violin ensemble make the songs much
more deep, melodic and melancholic. Quite accessible and
enojayble songs for an elegant and monumental result. Joined by some friends, a real
band is now ready for concerts. For fans of Seam, Apple
Seedcast, Mineral,....

BULBUL
-BulBul (tr075 / Trost) CD SFr 26.- LP SFr 23.-
Now available on vinyl. Current release from the same project, but a band in the
meantime (guitar, drums bass, trumpet, sax) and plays their very own
weird guitar driven music with jazz elements. This record has been described as
somewhere between Beefhart, Morricone, Melvins, Black Heart
Procession, Fall,....

CATCOSM
-sophie playing the recorder at school (kk04-lp/cd / Klangkrieg) CD SFr 27.- / LP SFr
22.50
A really exciting and good surprise from this German new comer which presents with
"Sophie playing the recorder at school" his first album. Catcosm
is the project of a guy called Sebastian, joined by a girlfriend adding vocals. At
some time instrumental, at some time lo-fi, made in a very intimate way,
guitars, female and man vocals, electronics, organs, drumboxes, and other found
sounds and magic shining melodies, to create intimate miniature
hymnic pop-rock pieces. Recorded on a 4-track. We will probably hear more and more of
this band, this is a real discovery, so check it out now!
Recommended.

HOOD
-Hood versus Duo Fourteen (555lp24 / 555 recordings) 10" SFr 16.-
Excellent and very limited 10" release which consists of a song by the UK-based Hood
band (Domino, Aesthetics, 555,....) on side A and a rework by
Duo Fourteen on the B side. Hood's song is a really brilliant
post-rock-atmospheric-electronic piece, while Duo Fourteen's rework rather explore
the
complex world of sample, electronic manipulation, ambient and deconstructed
structures. Highly recommended!

MICE PARADE
-Mokoondi (bc-033 / Bubble Core) CD SFr 27.-
Electric and acoustic guitars, kicking and dynamic drums creating complex patterns,
rhodes, vibes, bass, sample loops, strange atmospheres meet
more groove post-rock pieces percussion, xylophone,.... to create brilliant
instrumental pieces of unique quality and in their really own style. Mice
Parade (Adam Pierce, Dylan Group) already released records on Fat Cat, Bubble
Core,....

MOTORPSYCHO
-Phanerothyme (psychobabble033lp/cd / Stickman) CD SFr 27.- / LP SFr 25.-
It doesn't matter how often Motorpsycho release something new - it is eagerly awaited
by their fans as if their lives depended on it - and just as eagerly
debated once it has been heard. The new album by Motorpsycho has been titled
"Phanerothyme", a strange word coined by Aldous Huxley to describe
what he called the "positive side" of psychedelia. A definitely sublime new album by
the now legendary and highly respected Norwegian band, for their
incredible live acts as well as for their brilliant albums of their own unique style.
This new album just follows the sublimeness of their previous releases,
ranging from fragile and emotional acoustic rock pieces to more rocking 70's
influenced tracks, all of it done in a very subtle and meticulous way. A lot
of details, many different instruments, full of atmospheres, fragile melodies,
complex structures, perfectionist arrangements, rocking guitars, unusual
and clever sound patterns,?. making this record a definitely brilliant and elegant
album.

OLIVIA TREMOR CONTROL, THE
-presents : singles and beyond (emn7033 / Emperor Norton / Kindercore) CD SFr 27.- /
LP SFr 22.50
As much a concept as a band, the Olivia Tremor Control was one of the most visible
and innovative members of the Elephant 6 Recording Company
collective, a coterie of like-minded, lo-fi indie groups -- including the Apples In
Stereo, Neutral Milk Hotel and Secret Square -- who shared musicians,
ideas and sensibilities. The Olivia Tremor Control was led by
singers/songwriters/multi-instrumentalists William Cullen Hart and Bill Doss, natives
of the
small, isolated town of Ruston, Louisiana, where they struck up friendships with
fellow outsiders Robert Schneider (who went on to front the Apples)
and Jeff Mangum (the auteur behind Neutral Milk Hotel). This is a really fresh and
good pop music with some very cool electronics.

VARIOUS ARTISTS / Brumario
-(nois1013 / Acuarela) CD SFr 27.-
Nice compilation on the Spanish Acuarela label which already brought us bands like
Migala, Piano Magic, Spokane,.... With Mus, Migala, The Bitter
Springs, Los Planetas, Nosoträsh, Flow, The Montgolfier Brothers, Tinsel, Jr,
Sr-Chinarro, Emak Bakia, Paloma, Gnac, Ant, Pribata Idaho, Jackques,
Sukiyaki and Nacho Vegas. Songwriting, rock, pop and ambient.

Ambient / Experimental

AMP
-Perception (Bliss Out v.4 / Darla) 2xCD SFr 32.-
A melancholic instrumental epic mood piece in four movements. 88 minutes of music.
This record is the full Amp ensemble incorporating the sound of an
English winter rainstorm and a church choir with their signature melancholic space
drone, tonal wash-out, and collage of found sound. Music for you
and that special someone to pull the covers up over your heads with on that dark
rainy day. Absolutely beautiful ambient recordings built up with
delicate and very deep atmospheres, fragile and ethereal ambient sounds, outdoor
recordings, linear and evolving drones,.... 4 pieces of extreme
beauty and sensitivity which bring you in a faraway rainy ambient world. Highly
recommended.

KARKOWSKI, ZBIGNIEW
-choice of points for the application of force (ytterbium005 / Ytterbium) CD SFr 27.-

Bass frequencies, digitalised sounds, extremely low and brutal computer sounds,
digital manipulations,.... a really good sound art/digital record by
master Karkowski who played with people like Aube, Francisco López, Helmut Schäfer,
Edwin Van De Heide,.... excellent.

LABRADFORD
-A Stable Reference (krank006 / Kranky) CD SFr 27.-
2nd album by heavily acclaimed Chicago trio. Guitar, keyboards, bass & subdued vocals
mix up a brew of lo-ball ambiance and occasional icy sadness,
it's no wonder they're huge in the UK.

LABRADFORD
-Prazision (krank001 / Kranky) CD SFr 27.-
"A Richmond, VA duo consisting of guitar and analog synthesizer who exhibit a very
cool driftiness. A press release merely compares them to: Neu,
F/i, Spacemen3, Gate, Dead C. & Jim O'Rourke".

LABRADFORD
-Mi Media Narania (krank023 / Kranky) CD SFr 27.-
"With their fourth album, Labradford have once again broadened and varied their
sound, while maintaining their distinctive identity. Mi Media Naranja
adds a string section, Fender Rhodes electric piano and slide guitar to the trio's
sound bank. It is the most cinematic of Labradford's recordings to date.
The music alternately stretches, ripples or lofts its way past the listener as if it
was coming off a screen and not through speakers. The sounds here
are reminiscent of John Barry, Bill Evans and most of all, Labradford."

LABRADFORD
-Self-titled (krank013 / Kranky) CD SFr 27.-
"3rd album from this Richmond, VA trio (keyboards, bass, samples, guitar, vocals).
"From the beginning strains of chains dragging across a Co2
canister on 'Phantom Channel Crossing,' Labradford have infused the album with
sampled and real time percussion traces, at times faintly delving into
actual syncopation."

LABRADFORD
-fixed::context (krank047 / Kranky) CD SFr 27.- / LP SFr 23.-
"To record their sixth album, the members of Labradford met in Chicago to work with
Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in June 2000. fixed::content find the
trip stripping off the string trios of the last two albums and working with
interlocking sound sources and modifiers; Carter Brown's vintage
synthesizers, organs and electric piano, the distinctive Duane Eddy plays Satie
guitar of Mark Nelson and Bobby Donne's four and six string basses.
Beginning with the 16-minute "twenty," Labradford demonstrate grasp of the dialectic
between organic sound sources, digital processing and
composition. The guitar duet "up to pizmo" shows a refocusing on basic elements like
melody and twang while samples pulse below and keyboards
waft above. Labradford found that engineer Albini made an apt foil and fixed::context
resonates with the reverberating guitars and misty keyboards of
Prazision as sampling and processing bubbles beneath".

MARHAUG, LASSE
-Nothing But Sound From Now On (STS047 / Smalltown Supersound) CD SFr 26.-
Lasse Marhaug is one of the innovators of the norwegian noise/experimental scene.
With over a hundred releases under various constellations on
labels all over the world, as a solo artist, in collaborations and with various band.
Best known is his glitch electronic duo Jazzkammer (with John
Hegre), dronerock psychedelia outfit Del, and as a live musican with Origami Replika
(the punk-scum-performance fraction within the Origami Republika
network). His music is extremely rich on details. Layers of sound slowly reveal
themselves as you listen. The music ranges from open spaces and
ambient soundscapes to cut-ups and extreme digital brutalism. His use of blips and
clicks often with deep soundscapes in the background, creates a
shimmering and swirling sound. Somewhere between electro-acoustic and digital music,
Marhaug bring us extremely precise and cerebral experimental
pieces of a great quality, working on unique and complex sound textures as well as on
unusually and well constructed structures.

TORAL, RAFAEL
-Violence of discovery and calm of acceptance (staubgold 17 / Staubgold) LP SFr 22.-
The long awaited new album by this outstanding artist after his "Aeriola Frequency"
CD from 1998 feat. 10 tracks recorded between 1993 and 2000
and comes in wonderful full-colour sleeve designed by Jon Wozencroft. The CD version
of this album is released by Touch (UK). Rafael Toral,
considered by the press to be one of the most gifted and innovative guitarists of the
decade, explores once more a wonderful world of ambient music,
very fragile, subtle and carefully done, a complex world of echo, minimal guitar
loops, beautiful abstract drones, deep and emotional soundscapes,....
Recommended.

 WINDY & CARL
-Antarctica (Bliss Out v.2 / Darla) CDep SFr 18.-
Time slows your heart rate drops, the massive sound of "Antarctica" as slow, heavy
and breathtakingly beautiful as a glacier envelopes. Here
Dearborn, Michigan's King and Queen of etherea follow their critically acclaimed
second record The Drawing of Sound with a solid ambient epic. 47
minutes. 3 songs. Artic deep beautiful ambient music, Wind and Carly create in this
album with guitars and bass beautiful ambient landscapes full of
deep drones, abstract guitar soundscapes, beautiful ethereal layers of sounds,
echoes,.... Recommended.
