[microsound] Refrains
I was only able to catch one speaker, Charles Mudede, from the fine
publication The Stranger out of Seattle, WA and his talk on "The Politics of
Pleasure in Hip Hop Music". to be honest it wasn't the talk I was hoping to
get to, but I was running late and didn't know where green college was. so.
one of the many interesting things that Mudede talked about (meta music,
re-purposing of the turntable
and a vast history of hip hop) was the
listeners experience of pleasure - hip hop's roots in
street and rent parties. It is exciting music to listen to by yourself and
at a party. It worries me that it is only when listening to my own CD
through headphones do I feel that I'm in the right environment. now, maybe
that's ok to create music that is for people to listen to all by themselves.
but it certainly doesn't seem like there will be a "community" of listeners
when all the listening is done alone. and there is something sad about a
generation of people wandering around with walkman on instead of enjoying
music together. makes me want to play beats.
