I don't know what musicians or types of music Eno was talking about, but personally I think that, despite all the years of theorizing and experimenting, Eno has always maintained essentially a "pop" sensibility (by no means a bad thing).
I recall a comment in an interview he made years ago, that he found it interesting when a composer went to the outer reaches of experimentation, but he felt no need to go out there himself. It seems this more recent comment is in keeping with that.
