5.1 surround is really just quad with a center channel for dialogue in films 
(pretty useless for music) and a subwoofer channel (the .1).  Wendy Carlos 
has an excellent and exhaustive discussion of surround techniques and theory 
at her site http://www.wendycarlos.com/gosurround.html which I recommend 
reading if you're interested in multi-channel sound.
