creating silence?

I also see theraputic restructuring of sound
environments . .
negating sounds and making things quieter.

Have there been any projects/installations that try
and "create silence" through phase cancellation or
other means?  I only understand the concept of phase
cancellation at a very basic level, but the idea of a
performance/piece where the negation of sound is
scored seems novel to me.
