Re: [microsound] old thread

yes, but... if you take this argument to its logical conclusion , you
would say that all electronic music sounds the same as there are a
limited number of tools which are in circulation.

No, I'm saying that all of these different tools sound very different. Including max/msp. Yes it is flexible and in theory you can do "anything" with it. But in reality software synths do have a certain "sound" to them just like any other musical tool. I never said that everything created in max/msp sounds the same nor am I diminishing the decisions made by the artist as you claim. I just take issue with the implication that digital tools have no inherent "sound" of their own but are some sort of pure digital canvas.

Perhaps i should
rephrase - 'max/msp does not need to sound like what you would
expect it to sound like', in fact you could be using it and no one
would be the wiser unless they looked at your screen. i'd be suprised
if people were not occasionally surprised by the tools that some
people were using.. surely you have had this experience.

Come to think of it I've only ever had this experience with acoustic instruments. Maybe because that shock of recognition can only happen if we first have an understanding or prejudice about what an instrument sounds like. Or maybe it's because everyone wears their tools on their sleeves so it's no suprise when I find out that, say an album on the Cycling 74 label was made with ... Max/MSP!

the irony is that, given you can run the whole gamut of vst stuff
within Max/msp (including softsynths etc...) _and all the internal
objects and processors, Max/msp should have less chance of sounding
the same than just about any other commercially available piece of
software around... you don't have one filter, you have scores of
them...

Sure, but it's all still identifiable as software.
