THE SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT (fwd)
For the ones on the list who find it easy to get to Frankfurt, I got this
from a different list I'm on. They have the full line-up on the site and
it's impressive. I'm jealous.

ON FEBRUARY 9, 2002, THE SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT WILL OPEN THE EXHIBITION FREQUENCIES [Hz], AN INTERDISCIPLINARY EXPLORATION OF NEW DIMENSIONS IN HEARING AND LISTENING.
FREQUENCIES [Hz]
Audio-visual spaces
February 9 - April 28, 2002
Knut Åsdam, Mark Bain, Angela Bulloch, Farmersmanual, Tommi Grönlund\Petteri Nisunen, Carl Michael von Hausswolff, Ryoji Ikeda, Ann Lislegaard, Carsten Nicolai, Daniel Pflumm, Franz Pomassl, Ultra-red, Mika Vainio.
The exhibition entitled FREQUENCIES [Hz], which is to be presented at the SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT from February 9 to April 28, 2002, brings sound and space together in a multifaceted physical experience. The visitor enters acoustic spheres that transcend conventional concepts of sound and perceptions of space. In a quest for new dimensions of hearing and listening, the exhibition explores the total bandwidth of audio-visual perception in works conceived specifically for this show by leading contemporary artists in the field of "sound art". The spectrum extends from works on the threshold of the audible by Mark Bain that intervene directly in architectural structures and physically audible compositions by Franz Pomassl and Mika Vainio to minimal installations by Ryoji Ikeda, works of political and social relevance by Ultra-red and outdoor works such as the site-specific sound and light installation by Carsten Nicolai in the outdoor space of the SCHIRN Rotunda. The show is!
further extended through sound works by Ultra-red presented in the radio in collaboration with Hessischer Rundfunk hr2 and will be accompanied by an extensive supplementary program compiled by Carsten Nicolai, including concerts and performances.
FREQUENCIES [Hz] is the first exhibition in the program conceived by Max Hollein, the new Director of the SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT. In Max Hollein's view, the exhibition offers "an experimental approach to sound and space that evokes an immediate sensual experience". Exhibition curator Jesper N. Jørgensen seeks to introduce "a new generation of artists who, in continuation of the ideas of the artistic and musical avant-garde, use sound and electronic frequencies as their material in producing sculptural, visual, audible and spatial experiences".
ON FEBRUARY 15, 2002, THE SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT WILL OPEN THE EXHIBITION "THE VISIONS OF ARNOLD SCHÖNBERG", DEVOTED THE COMPOSER'S HIGHLY ACCLAIMED YET EQUALLY CONTROVERSIAL PAINTING.
THE VISIONS OF
ARNOLD SCHÖNBERG
The Paintings
February 15 - April 28, 2002
Arnold Schönberg (Vienna, 1874 - Los Angeles, 1951) ranks among the most important and innovative composers of the twentieth century. Though less well-known, his contribution as a painter to modern art is also noteworthy in its own right. From February 15 to April 28, 2002, the SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT will present 150 selected paintings representing the Expressionist oeuvre of thus great innovator. His paintings, which earned early praise from such contemporaries as Kandinsky and Jawlensky but were a focus of controversy within the artists' group "Der Blaue Reiter", have lost nothing of their visionary power over the years. The exhibition will be accompanied by performances of some of Schönberg's most outstanding musical compositions by the Frankfurt Museumsorchester der Oper Frankfurt under the direction of Paolo Carignani, the Ensemble Modern, the Walter Levin and the Basler Streichquartett, Stefan Litwin and others.
Likes his musical compositions, Schönberg's Expressionist visual art, most of which was created during an eruptive phase in his life as an outlet for the energy that powered his quest for personal and artistic expression, has always tended to polarize public response. Today, fifty years after his death, his painting continues to challenge the viewer, who is nevertheless captivated by their hypnotic aura.
