ok start a journal already

hi-
1st of all i recommend a stack of bandpass filters as
an option to look at for cleaning audio- the grm
without resonance or the pluggos (although i may have
to look and see if the one im remembering came w/ the
install or off the net somewhere) or whatever you
have. Basically alot of sounds can be reduced
drastically in spectrum and still serve their purpose
for communication, And you will find the proble,
frequencies as well.
Also I would like to know what journals people on
this board might recommend- or maybe someone should
actually start one? Seriously though this board is a
good find for me (im new) and a nice forum for a
speculative and unguarded style of conversation.
I must admit I get a bit funny when I hear the word
"fetish". I think it's sometimes a bit hard to
distinguish it's psychoanalytic meaning (which im sure
is in little danger of becoming fixed in meaning) from
a Marxian sense, where the commodity is understood as
"fetishized" because the invested labor is no longer
perceived in exchange.
Anyway whenever I hear someone accused of
"fetishizing" something I usually get the sense that
their putative crime is overvaluing this thing in a
sort of "magical" way, perhaps using it to explain
other stuff, but "fetish" used this way seems
desperately to require as its opposite term a sense of
shared rationality which many who use the term might
be embarassed of using as a "ground" (actually they
would just be mad at me for harassing them).
So, the "use value" of, say, a bootleg of a
nippleless tits performance. Hmmmm. IS music supposed
to be fetishized or is it already of the substance of
the fetish, being mute and "indeterminate" or shall I
say "premysticized" (ps re: paper lyotard's sublime?
just curious)
I heard someone on NPR the other day implying
(perhaps i stretch) that the "use value" of the
humanities was freedom. Wasnt clear whether the
creation, protection or what, just that it was "about
freedom". If "use value" remains the ground then I
have to wonder about the use value of freedom?
I like my fetish, personally. It doesn't make me
free, but it gives a warm feeling. On an unrelated
note
i once sublated myself by my own bootstraps but the
pictures came out overexposed.
The best thing I've read recently was in
Foucault's intro to anti-oedipus.

4. Do not think that one must be sad in order to be
militant, even though the thing one is fighting is
abominable; It is the connection of desire to reality
(and not its retreat into the forms of representation)
that possesses revolutionary force.
oh ok just one more (sorry)
3. Withdraw allegiance from the old categories of the
Negative (law, limit, castration, lack, lacuna), which
Western thought has so long held sacred as a form of
power and an access to reality. Prefer what is
positive and multiple, flows over unities, mobile
arrangements over systems. Believe what that what is
productive is not sedentary but nomadic.

Ok so this napster thing is I think a wonderful
example of a contemporary ethical issue. A question of
desire and of capital, where the actual structure of
the world system is somewhat malleable? Here we have
production and desire, im not sure if its a libidinal
economy but I think it looks like at least a cousin of
such. And the question we ask is how to or whether to
attach it to the other economy. The idea of music as a
luxury is a bit troubling to me- music wasn't invented
in the 60s or lampooned in any pop art. Attali
references musicians historical social status as an
underclass. Actually the idea of music as a luxury
requires that human life be seen as solely
instrumental and I believe points up the popular
conceptions remaining from the previous century of
Ford. Music and art cannot be justified as essential
because of their relation to god any longer (in this
secular zone). They dangle, unreified, indeterminate,
non-instrumental (except where justified
economically). This is why they remain the most
essential aspects of our existence? No of course not.
I could say freedom, but

if in london dont miss steenbeckett, it is amazing.
The stan douglas is good too...

night
Brad
